A lot of the artists whose music I like played 12-string guitar for much or most of their repertoire (Gordon Lightfoot, John Denver, Kingston Trio during the John Stewart years, etc).  I play a Seagull S-12+ which I bought this past January, and I've been playing it more recently with Loose Change & Friends.

Hi there

I love the 12 string guitar - I had one before I even bought a regular 6 string! (Still have it, a rather battered Yamaha, now open-tuned Louisiana style - it's best days are behind it, really - and usually used for open/slide playing). Also have small-bodied Crafter electro, which gets a lot of use for live and occasional session playing.

The 12-string is a strange instrument, I always think - beautiful sound, hard to master at times, tricky to record and amplify. The recordings of the likes of Leadbelly and Roger McGuinn were the first places I heard it, and I loved it. It's worth checking out Fred Neil (assuming you haven't already!) - great 12-string player.

Dan :)

Poet,

Nice to hear from you.  The new 12-strings they have now are really affordable and easier to play than the ones made years ago.  Here's one of the Loose Change & Friends songs where I played the Seagull 12-string (I used a Dean Markley magnetic pick-up on the recording):

Mountain Dew

I really enjoyed that! :) Great playing all round - nice 12 string solo too!!

The last time I used my old Yamaha in concert pitch was to record this..

http://ezfolk.com/audio/play.php?band_id=665&song_id=2578&mode=song_lofi

Since then, it's been tuned down to D or G - it seems to sound better like that..

You're quite right about the newer 12 strings - some of them are very well designed for adapting from a more regular playing style. Seagull are very well made and very 'player-friendly' guitars in general, of course, so I guess you made a sound choice there.

Dan :)

Dan:

Thank you for the compliment.  Your song, "You Know How It Goes" sounded fantastic!  Sounds like your Yamaha 12-string still has plenty of life and tone.  Thanks for sharing and for your inspiration.

Will

I had a Seagull M-12 until recentley , installed a Dualie transducer in it .It was great for adding to my little ditty's, makes things sound a lot bigger. I never got any good on it and ended up selling it to get something else . I hope one day to pick up another , fell in love with a Tak jumbo maple one that played and sounded so sweet .... one day maybe .

Hi:

I just bought a RD2012U Alvarez 12 string.  What do you think of these guitars?

They look and feel really nice, but the one I played in a music store had a weird tone to it. Could have been the 'factory-fit' strings and action, of course!!

I should say, that's the only Alvarez guitar I've ever played, so it's not a general comment on the brand... :)

Dan :)

I loved the Alarez 12's , the 20 was great for the price but the upscale model (I forget the number)  was a steal of a deal . That was one of the reasons I parted with my seagull , I planned to upgrade to an alvarez or Tak but something came up and finances didn't permit. And 3rd, the sound could have been the elixr strings that come with them ? Great bang for the buck I think , alvarez I mean .

Elixirs do make some guitars sound weird - I don't like them at all, except (ironically) on my rather ancient Yamaha 12-string - the rather annoying overly zingy tone they have compensates for the rather beat-up sound it has now! I also tend to tune it to a D or G, so that probably counteracts the Elixir tone a bit..?

Dan :)

It requires great courage to finger-pick a 12 string! :) Or fearless skill..! Still, having heard some of your stuff over at SC, I guess you'd be the man to do it!

:D Not really. Although I did get pretty good at it, I found that for myself, I had to be really aggresive when playing the instrument. At least that's the way it always seemed when trying to get past that first set of strings.

I even tried just picking the larger strings and bypass the smaller strings in some cases, but that's almost impossible. But by doing that you're just defeating the purpose of the 12 string.

I guess it is a bit more 'physical' playing a 12-string - for a rather 'percussive' player like me, that ain't too bad, of course! :D

Dan :)

I bought my Yamaha 12 string back in the 80's. I like it better than 6 string but its nice to be able switch off once in a while. I like the full sound.

Hi, Holley,

Congratulations on being selected the Featured Artist of the Week!  That's some great music you've posted.

Hi Will! Thanks for listening! :) I have many ideas to add , but not enough time in a day to get there. This year I will make it happen!  I tried to find your link on EZfolk but somehow missed it. Do you have one?
