Is it just me? I can't tell the sound difference between regular coiled PUs and humbucker PUs. I know Strats are usually regular coiled and Teles have the humbuckers. Most people tell me the humbuckers have a fatter sound. Jimi played the Strat and Carlos plays PRS. Same era and different styles of music but what would happen if they'd switch guitars? Would Black Magic Woman or Purple Haze sound different?

Anyone out there know??

The single coil pickup sound is said to be "bright" and "clear" compared to the humbucker (usually a double coil design wired in reversed polarity), which generates  a "warm" or "fat" tone.  Funk-style guitar, just about pioneered by Jimi Hendrix, almost requires the Stratocaster single-coil sound.  Carlos Santana's solos would have a very different, thinner tone without the humbuckers he had on his Gibson SG's and Paul Reed Smith guitars.

Might've sounded slightly different, but tone is also in the hands.  Jimi was known to play a Gibson Flying-V, which is loaded with humbuckers, and while the tone was fatter it was still unmistakenbly Jimi.

Clapton started out playing Les Pauls and Gibson SGs, both with humbuckers, and switched over to Strats with the coils.   Pete Townshend is another example of going back and forth (started on Rickenbackers with the coils, moved to Fenders, switched to Gibsons and is back on Fenders), he still sounds like Pete Townshend.

Lots of examples out there if you want to hear the differences in the two types.

Thanks for the input Will and Mikelewis,

What are your opinions on putting a humbucker on my strat over buying a guitar with humbuckers?

I also have a Danelectro I bought because of the lipstick tube PUs. It suppose to have the cleanest electric sound. Do you guys know if those are wound different from the humbucker and SC PUs?

Thanks again...

It depends on your budget and what you really want out of your guitars.  You could always swap out the coils for a set of buckers, DiMarzio makes humbuckers that drop right into a Strat.  You could always put the coils back in if you like.

My personal preference is to keep the Strat with the coils, if I want a humbucker sound I probably would opt for a Gibson or Epiphone.  Never hurts to have a variety of guitars if your budget allows for it.

I'm not familiar with the Danos, but I believe the lipsticks are single-coil as well but wired in series rather than the traditional parallel wiring of a Strat or Tele.  Thus you get a warmer, more bucker sound with the Danos.
