Hi everyone... i have never played the guitar before and i would like to start playing. But im having trouble picking out a guitar. My price range is between $250 and $450. I recently went to a music store and the guy recommended a CORT also there was a YAMAHA a bit above my price range, but im open to any brand. So any suggestions of the brand to buy would be helpful! Thanks. Everyone =]

In that price range there are some good choices. You might find a lower-end Blueridge guitar. I also like the Washburn and Epiphone guitars. I have played some nice Yamaha guitars as well. My only experience with Cort was my brother's Cort electric bass guitar, I've not played one of their acoustics. I own a Rogue acoustic/electric dreadnaught guitar that I boght from Musician's Friend that is one of the better guitars that I have owned (I tend to buy inexpensive instruments); it cost less than $100 brand new. Below is a link from EZ Folk that gives a percentage of your purchase to this site. http://www.ezfolk.com/mf/acoustic-guitar/Rogue.html Good luck!

The only thing I'd recommend in that price range is to find a solid-top. Proper intonation would be high on my iste as well. I think the Blueridge products are quite amazing, but as for a brand, I'd also be looking at the Canadian brand Art & Lutherie and/or Seagull. Again, get an instrument with solid top. If it says "select spruce," it is not a solid spruce top. Finish, neck angle, action are all things you should be listening at. When you pay a bit more for a guitar, you're supposedly paying for something that's been put together with a bit better care. What I mean by that is that yes, it is possible to find a dynamite instrument in all regards in that price range, but the more you pay, the less it is a matter of luck.

I own a Blueridge and several Seagull guitars. They are great-sounding, affordable guitars with solid tops. The Blueridge has a solid spruce top and laminated rosewood back and sides. The Seagulls have solid cedar tops and laminated wild cherry back and sides. All of them are have great workmanship and are easy to play with minor set up adjustments. If you are playing rock or country music and you will primarily be using a pick, go with the Blueridge. If you want a deeper bass, go with a solid spruce top and rosewood back and sides. The dreadnought size is the most popular size acoustic guitar. The Blueridge BR-40 (solid spruce top, laminated mahogany back and sides) sells for about $450 at Musician's Friend and Music123: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Blueridge-BR40-Contemporary-Series-Dreadnought-Acoustic-Guitar?sku=515098 The normally higher-priced Blueridge BR-60 (solid spruce top, laminated rosewood back and sides) is on sale as a closeout item at Woodwind & Brasswind for about the same price as the BR-40, selling for $446: http://www.wwbw.com/Blue-Ridge-BR60-----Acoustic-Guitar-(Closeout)-i151152.music ![]() If you would like a slightly smaller size guitar than the dreadnought size that is easier for a beginner to play, you may be interested in the auditorium (also called 000 - "triple O") size, such as the Blueridge BR-43 (the 000 version of the spruce and mahogany BR-40), which is selling for $371: http://www.wwbw.com/Blue-Ridge-BR43-----Acoustic-Guitar-i151151.music Or, you might consider the BR-63 (the 000 version of the spruce and rosewood BR-60), selling for $446 (I own a fancier version of this guitar): http://www.wwbw.com/Blue-Ridge-BR63-----Acoustic-Guitar-(Closeout)-i151153.music ![]() The solid cedar-topped Seagulls offer a slightly more mellow (less bright) sound than the spruce-top guitars. They are priced in the $300 to $400 range for their starter versions. Keep in mind that cedar is a very soft wood compared to spruce, and it gets nicked rather easily, especially with the satin finish. Seagull S6 Entourage (dreadnought) - I own this model - $299 - standard 1.72" neck width http://www.ezfolk.com/mf/acoustic-guitar/Seagull_S6_Entourage_Acoustic_Guitar_Rustic_Burst.html ![]() Seagull S6 (dreadnought) - $379 - has slightly wider neck width of 1.8" http://www.ezfolk.com/mf/acoustic-guitar/Seagull_The_Original_S6_Acoustic_Guitar_Natural.html ![]() Last edited on Mon Mar 24th, 2008 04:00 am by Will ____________________ Will http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/297/ Loose Change & Friends http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/245/ http://loosechangeandfriends.com The Earth Tones http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/337/ |
