What book, CD, or DVD would you recommend for the beginner? I bought a guitar about a month ago and know several chords, just can't change too fast.

Hey, guy.  Just go to the library and look in the music listings for Guitar.  Then sort out the lesson books and browse a couple.

There is no Best one.  But there are books by Gerry Silverman and a host of others.  Some are simple beginner books, some are complete courses in county, folk, classical or what ever.

Use the library index and you will probably find DVD's and videos as well.

If you find one you like, or a series (V1, V2, V3 etc.) then pick them up at the bookstore.

If your library has a "used book" store attached (mine does) look there,  I have about 100 that I have picked up over the years for as little as $0.50.

As far as changing.  Constant repetition is the only way.  Play a C and switch to D, repeat until you are comfortable.  Then play the D and switch to G,  and so on.  Then try a 3 or 4 chord pattern.  They don't need to be melodic.  Just something that lets your hand and fingers (not your mind) learn the muscles needed to make the chord and the change.

PS:  Hobie, or homemade or other??

Thanks for the help.

I have a Catalina 27 and used to have a Hobiecat 16.  Don't get to sail as much as I'd like too. End up working too much.

Bob
