I been playing on my guitar for a week now and my fingertips are sore. How long does it take to get over this?

....as long as it takes for you to develop calluses. It's just something you need to work through. In the mean time try some anesthesia, I find whiskey works well. You'll need to take it internally not topically for the best results.

Peace,
Ed

Hi Catsailr

Your fingers will get tougher - i find the calluses build up and peel off to leave softer calluses behind.

I use vitamin e oil (externally) on my fingertips if they get sore - you can get it from health food shops.

Hope that helps

Roj

Here's a sneaky tip: Every once in a while I knaw a calouse off (don't ask) and I find putting a dab of cyanoacrylate (crazy) glue spread over the tip keeps me pain free for long enough to grow them back. :)

Like he said.  A drop or two of "Crazy Glue" or one of its competitors on your fingertips will "stiffen" them and help you practice longer without getting sore.

As for "sore", only time will cure that.  When your fingers get tender STOP.  Another thing that can help in the overall is to get a rubber ball and use your fretting hand Squeeze it to build up the grip strength.

Or put your hand palm down on a table.  Lay a book (one with some weight), on the finger tips and practice raising it one finger at a time.  Adjust the weight so that about 10 reps tire your fingers.  When you can do 15 or so, increase the weight.

This execise won't cure your "pain", but will eventually help the full Barre grip so you don't cramp up when using full barre chords.

I found that a nylon string guitar is a bit easier on the finger tips than a steel string guitar. Are you playing a steel string guitar?

Lowering action helps too but too low will create string buzz.

If the instrument is not a "classical or Flamenco" guitar which come with nylon and in some rare instances gut, then light gage or Silk and Steel strings will make it easier to play.  Most acoustics as you buy them come with Mediums.  It's nearly a given.

Of course, classical and Flamenco (or "Spanish"), guitars are usually nylon.

I find that Nylon on an instrument made for steel just doesn't "sound".  So if your current string set is Medium, as most are, switch to light, or Silk and Steel, at least until you get some finger strength and tougher fingertips.

Many instruments come from the factory with a rather high action.  It's assumed that the player will have it adjusted to suit their playing style.

An adjustment is pretty quick and easy, most shops can handle it quickly and cheaply; it can make a world of difference.    Give yourself a little time; those callouses will build.
