I'd like to start learning classical guitar and I'm using a self-instruction book entitled, "Play Classical Guitar" by David Braid. For now, I'm just planning on doing this by self-study. I'm not aspiring to become a performer; this is for my own enjoyment as a personal challenge.

I have an Applause AE-36 which is a metal-string guitar. Is it a bad idea to try learning classical on a metal-string or can it be done (albeit with difficulties)? Can I "make-do" with a metal-string for now? What would my challenges be? Would I start cultivating bad habits, or would I just be missing-out on subtleties that can only be expressed by a nylon-string guitar?

I've been doing right-hand exercises. One warning that I had read somewhere is that metal-string guitars do not have as much space between the strings. I have relatively small hands so this difference doesn't seem to be a problem for me.

I might be able to buy myself a nylon-string guitar in a couple of years but, right now, I don't have the room or the budget for it. :(

You should be able to do most of it without any trouble because of the guitar.

You will find that the Classical neck is flatter and wider, which trains your hand and finders differently, but except for "rolls", which are easier with nylon or gut strings, the playability will depend more on your practicing than the "steel" strings.

I play some classical pieces on my steel string, as do some friends.

You can ease the situation by using medium, light or extra light SILK AND STEEL STRINGS.

d'Agio and Martin make them in a variety of "weights".  The four bottom strings (6-5-4-3) are silk core with metal windings, and the first two (1-2) are standard metal strings.

But the overall effect is close to nylon or classical gut, as far as "feeling".

Blackman, thanks for the advice! I had done some research since reading your post and it sounds like the silk and steel strings will work for me.
