hey everyone I bought my first guitar( art and lutheria Ami parlor guitar) and i'm trying to learn how to play it.  So far I have a begginer book and I got a little way into that but then I just decided to skip to chords and Im trying to learn them and make transitions. My freind taught me to play part of free fallin. other than that I don't know much.

Id like to learn top play american folk songs, song from the 18th , bluegrass, blues old school country  and reggae.  Evenatually create my own songs. I really enjoy singing which is why I wanted to pick up guitar in the first place.

So far I seem to learn guitat better from people who can already play.

Im looking for any begginer advice from anyone.

Thanks

Brother in Arms

Hey Brother,

That's a great guitar to start with. Since you've got an interest in American folk music you should take a look at the tablatures and tutorials on ezFolk. Just follow the links on this page...

There are tons of other guitar websites out there. Books and DVDs are great, especially if you're trying to learn something specific, but you might be able to learn just as much for free on the Internet if you look around some. There are a lot of different approaches to the guitar and you'll find some that you like better than others. Keep an open mind and learn a lot of different things from a lot of different people and you'll eventually settle into your own style of playing.

Feel free to ask any questions you have right here in the ezFolk forums.

Good luck!

hi

I'm new to guitar too. Well, I messed around for years and decided to take it a bit more seriously.

My BIG advice for you is...get a teacher. It really helps. Doesn't have to be a great one, don't get a crap one though, just someone who can point stuff out to you once a week, correct your mistakes and give you a bit of structure.

A lot of people recommend using vids from the net or dvds- yeah, they're good but sometimes you just don't get stuff and can't see it properly. A teacher can fix all that as you can ask them directly. Vids on the net can't correct you either.

I've had 2 teachers, one who was useless and my present one...even my useless one had a small positive effect on my playing. I found it highly useful.

With a teacher once a week, some on-line vids or DVDs and a friend to help out you'll come along fine.
