Hello, all!

I have completely forgotten which chords fit into the key of A minor, so if anybody could jog my memory by posting a brief list of a few examples of progressions, I would be very grateful.

Thanks!

ShadyHarrison.

A minor is the relative minor of C major. Try chords that work in C major.

If you go to my website (in my sig) you can download a "cheater theory" guide that will help with these sort of questions.

Here's a page of chord shapes to be used within minor keys. Just find C minor root...

Whoever wrote that page must be some kind of genius.

Keep in mind playing in a relative minor (Am) to C changes the usual C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am, Bdim...to:

Am, B, C, D, E, F, G ...note the loss of the usual Major, Minor, Minor, Major, Major, Minor, Diminished.

Think "House of the rising Sun"

Am would be....

Am, Bdim, CM, Dm, Em, FM, GM

So you might want to use Em, FM would both go well, it all depends on your progression, and in the right places, borrowed chords work. Just get creative, mess around.

Also, would someone double check me. Im sure a minor key goes minor, diminished, major, minor, minor, major, major...

It depends.  A harmonic minor raises the seventh degree a half step, so instead of Em, you'd use an E-major triad as the dominant fifth.  However, if the melody is more pentatonic, aka American frontier music, the song will keep more of that "minor" feel if VII (in this case, G-major) is substituted for the dominant.  D-minor would be the "four" chord in many cases, although again it depends.  The melodic minor raises both the sixth and seventh degrees a half step, so the four chord would be D-major.  Actually, Am / D / G / Am might be a fun progression to play with.  Going back to that frontier, folksy sound, though, the six chord makes a nice substitute for the four in minor keys, so Am / F / G / Am is comparable to I-IV-V-I in a major key.

The modal sound of the different minors open up all kinds of possibilities.  I'd suggest playing around with Am, Dm, F, C, G and E to find a sound you like.  Feeling froggy?  Throw a Bb in as a passing chord from Am to F and see what happens.  Just a thought.

Peace,

Dean
