I low-balled a bid on an online auction and won. A broken (I knew it was not in good condition when I bid) dulcimer has entered my herd. I've already fixed the cracked and open joint separations. It is a home made instrument that's sort of hour-glass. I intend to neaten up some of the carving. It's cutey and for $27, what the heck. Already making a capo for it. But the bridge is movable and since the fret count is diatonic (as dulcimers are supposed to be), the 12/12 rule is out the window. Anyone know a rule for bridge placement. This is a four string instrument. I assume ddDA (high to low)tuning, but would welcome suggestions. (The other bass acoustic and lap-steel projects are moving along slowly.) personally I go with (from low to high) d a aa or d a dd but yeah fool around with different tunings but yeah i like to keep about a fifth inbetween each string...like if you have a d on the low string go to the third fret and tune the next string which will be an a Last edited on Tue Dec 23rd, 2008 08:42 pm by Rafi18 |

I'll be doing a lot of experimentation. Thanks for the advice. Do you know the rule for dulcimer bridge placement. I have mine place by ear. But want to be sure.

Phil: My dulcimer has a fixed bridge (fits into a groove on the neck). It's relative, the grand strumstick (DAd-tuned dulcimer-guitar hybrid) has a floating bridge which I had to adjust by ear.
