I have about 7 years of playing experience with the piano. I'm more... Classically trained than anything else. Anyone else here play piano?

This friday is my first piano lesson. I'd like to learn some music theory and I have found a teacher for this. She claims that I have to learn piano, too. (I learnt violin for 7 years.)

I was a keyboard player (organ, piano, electronic keyboard) before I played any stringed instruments (pre-1994), but I play completely by ear and I do not read music.

Just a suggestion, but if you wanted to play another instrument in a short time that is familiar, based upon your violin training, you could probably play the mandolin in a very short time.  It has the same GDAE  tuning and fingering patterns as a violin, and it is about the same size and tonal range.  The major adjustment would be the presence of metal frets on a flat fingerboard, and playing with a plectrum instead of a bow.  You would also be able to play 2-finger chords and strum all 4 strings instead of being limited to double-stops.

Will, thank you for the suggestion. When I bought my ukulele the other option was the mandolin. I chosed the uke because the chords were simpler on the uke and because I
also played classical guitar for a year. I have two ukuleles now, a soprano and a concert, a guitar. a flute, a viola, a violin and  a keyboard, and I don't have time to play all these instruments. Now I play the  guitar and  uke, and probably I will play the  keyboard.

Since you already play guitar and uke, you're familiar with the fretted fingerboard. You can actually play a number of chords on the mandolin by fretting only 2 strings:

Two Finger Chords

What more could you want? Easy chords that sound great. Each one requires only two fingers and you get to play the open strings as well. These come in handy for a wide variety of music and are a great resource if you're just learning to play. Don't let those 13ths scare you -- they make great substitutes for 7th chords.

These mandolin chords are simple .  I sing in a bhajan band. We sing and play Indian bhajans and kirtans in "European style" in a yoga center. I would like to play the uke there, and I have no choice for the chords, I have to play the same chords as the  leading singer  on a  guitar. Sometimes we have international yoga seminars, and there
is a guy from Slovakia playing the mandolin in the bhajan band. But no one plays the uke yet.
