Greetings,

I've been considering taking up the bouzouki to accompany myself in song as well as melody players on tunes.  I'm fairly certain I would like a 4 course model with a long scale like the Trinity Colllege shown here:

http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/items/TC375B.htm

To that end I would love to hear opinions about models that would fall into a price range of $350. to $550.  New or very good condition used is fine with me.

Thanks for your time and assistance.

All the best!

Peace,
Ed

I don't own or play bouzouki or octave mandolin, but I have ordered 3 other fine instruments (tenor guitar, tenor banjo, and octave guitar) from Lark In The Morning, and they have several instruments that you might be interested in:

From what I've read, the bouzouki has a longer neck, and usually tuned with octave paired strings on the G and D, and doubles for the A and E.  Octave mandolins have a shorter neck and have 4 pairs of doubled strings.

In a similar price range ($450) as the Trinity College models, is the solid wood  bouzouki made by Johnson:

Very unusual is the $589 Morgan Monroe octave mandolin - the only octave mandolin I've ever seen that has F-holes instead of the round/oval soundhole, and even an F-style mandolin scroll body:

Thanks Will, a bit more grist for the mill.  It seems that unless I get really lucky and find a hand made used model cheap my choices, given my budget, are these Far East made machines.   I'm going into the city soon so I'll try a few out and see.

Thanks again for your time, research, and suggestions.

All the best!

Peace,
Ed

Ed:

Lark In The Morning also sells a long-scale (26") version of the bouzouki.   It costs $245:
