I just picked up an E-bay accordion. Provided it is in tune--uh...relative tune--and the bellows don't leak, I'm gonna play.

"Helga": http://i10.ebayimg.com/02/i/03/49/6c/dc_1_b.JPG

Anybody have any experience with these little monsters? Any advice?

I got it because I want something that will work with the uke. In my imagination, they go well together.

UF-

I think the bass side of most accordians are either chord or just bass note buttons. If note buttons, they are played like any Bass (usually the chord root or 4th or 5th); if chord buttons, like chording a piano with the left hand.

Is it really an accordian, or did you manage to get a real folk instrument like a squeeze box? Post a picture, why don't you? (I better go, I'm beginning to sound like Yoda!)

:thumbs2: Keep on pickin'
Brad

Looks like a piano accordion. I don't know much about that kind; they usually seem to have millions of bass buttons. There are books out there, though, for that kind, as opposed to the kind I have (two-row diatonic, which apparently is the favored kind for Tejano and Irish music). I think harpdepot.com sells some, for example. My accordion's bass buttons work the way banjo brad says, anyway, but there are only 8 of them. For my accordion, I think basically you have the tonic, subdominant, and dominant chords for each of the two keys the accordion is in, plus some power chords, it looks like. I don't play the thing much, as I have very little documentation on it and I receive many death threats :). On the other hand, I receive even more death threats with the harmonica :D.

Yeah, I have a 12-bass piano accordion. Love the sound. Pic is in the post above.

I'm figuring out the bass--yes, it's 120-button, all diatonic, which is perfect for polka music.

Row 2 is fundamental bass, row one is counter-bass (1/2 step above or below to the transitional chord, or third up from fundamental), row 3 is major chord, row 4 is minor, row 5 is 7th chords, and row 6 is diminished.

I have found out that German music is in a major key, and Italian music is in minor keys.

The accordion must have four reed sets because it plays octaves on both sides. It has a very full sound, and is an amazing piece of technology if you think about the fullness of sound it produces with out electricity our outside amplification. I think it was a student accordion, as there is an old music lesson book in there with kid's writing from 1958. It is full-size. I would have liked to see the kid playing it! Would have been quite a picture.
