Egads! 16 strings? Maybe like an autoharp - sorry I can't help you. (Here's what one looks like - scroll to the bottom of the page: http://home.comcast.net/~ukecat/ukeset/ukemus3.html ) Brad

From what I've read, the ukelin is a cross between a ukulele and a violin. It is played with a bow.![]() Here are 2 web sites that talk about them: http://www.geocities.com/~ukelin/ http://www.fretlesszithers.com/bowed.html Last edited on Tue Nov 13th, 2007 07:39 pm by Will ____________________ Will http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/297/ Loose Change & Friends http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/245/ http://loosechangeandfriends.com The Earth Tones http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/337/ A Bunch Of Coconuts http://abunchofcoconuts.com |

I can't see any arch there. I wonder if you just bow the whole thing. Intriquing at any rate. Will, did you notice there was both a bow and a thumb pick by the instrument in your picture? Brad

It's also referred to as a bowed zither, and its sound is like that of a bowed psaltery. http://www.fretlesszithers.com/clips/rosin.mp3

I have and play a ukelin just like in the picture. I bow the melody strings, and at the same time you chord the 4 different chords with a thum pick or a pick used for banjo. Great unusual sound but onle in the key of C. John in Union Grove Wi.

I guess I'd have to actually see one. I know a psaltry is arched so you can bow the strings, but I haven't been able to see any arch in the pictures. Brad

The melody strings are on the side and the chords are the strings in the middle of the instrument. You can bow between the outside post for each note. There are 16 melody strings plus 16 in set of four strings for each chord. For a total of 32 strings.

The Ukelin is really more of a cross between the bowed psaltery and the autoharp. The chords are strummed with the thumb of one hand (four sets of strings tuned to an open chord, no way to really change any of it) while the bow hand holds the bow at an angle to the side of the instrument and plays the melody strings. I sort of think it would be a better instrument than the bowed psaltery, which I find really grating because the metal strings being out the nasal high harmonics when bowed at the pegs the way they are. Ick! As one local musician said of his psaltery "it sounds like Hell. They all do." Every time my wife catches me looking at one, she repeats that line. And she's right! But if there is some sort of backup (like a guitar playing chords), the nasal irritating tone seems to go away. If the instrument provided its own chords, it could be fun to play without having to go begging for a guitarist to help out. But I'm not willing to shell out for a Ukelin just to find out. When my wife catches me looking at Ukelins online, she doesn't say anything. Doesn't have to. I know already. -Patrick
