When I first heard about the McNally Strumstick, I decided to buy the larger Grand Strumstick which is tuned D-A-d, rather than the more popular standard strumstick tuned G-C-g, because it played in the same key as the mountain dulcimer.  However, unlike the mountain dulcimer, which plays only in one key, the strumstick can be  capoed.

On a strumstick, a spring-style banjo capo such as a Kyser or Dunlop works better than a cam-style Shubb capo, due to the rather thick and narrow strumstick neck.

Due to the irregular fret spacing, however, the key change is quite different than what you would get on a guitar neck.  On a Grand Strumstick, a capo installed on the 3rd fret changes the key from D to G; on the 4th fret, it changes the key from D to A.  You will lose some high string melody notes, but you can also play the middle string to get some of the lower notes.

A radically different tuning results when the Grand Strumstick is capoed on the 1st or 2nd frets.  You will get a minor modal tuning, which may be useful for certain old time tunes such as Cluck Old Hen, Shady Grove, etc.

If you have a standard (GCg) strumstick, try a capo on the 1st fret and the key changes to A minor.  The capo at the 3rd fret gives you C major.
