I ran into this instrument at a folk instrument store in Santa Barbara and was wondering if anyone had any info on tabs or sheet music, can it be played with dulcimer tabs. I picked one up and started playing and just had to buy it, the thing sounds great, I am just trying to make it a little more versitile.

              Thank you

I've seen them before but never played one. Looks like fun.

There are 73 songs notated for the Strumstick on the Strumstick website as well as quite a bit of information about playing it. Here's a link to the song page...

Im probably a month too late, but yes I have a grand strumstick which is tuned dad, and yes you can use dulcimer tabs but you will have to invert the top and bottom lines, the regular strumstick I believe is tuned to g, And I also like the sound of the regular strumstick, I thinking of building one of my own in the future if it all holds together, Im going to call it a no pick stick, I dont play a saw, I probably would end up cutting my leg off, We all need to get this website cranked up, there seems to be some slack in it due to no one posting, Richard has done a great job with it and can be a whole lot more chatter on it than what we have right now.

I play the grand strumstick.  I posted an MP3 of "Home Sweet Home" by Loose Change & Friends, where I am playing the strumstick.  (see below)

Hi. Looked at them, decided they were basically a dulcimer held differently. Looked like fun, but I ended up going uke crazy, instead.
Hey, are you one of the teachers that played at the dinner recently? You guys were great fun. I'm the drummer from "Taken Back", the other group that night. They won't let me play uke with the group...........Bill d.

I played dulcimer for many years, and was surprised and delighted by the McNally strum stick (it has a triangular sound box.

However, I have just discovered the Smokey Mountain Music Works and their strum sticks which have an elegant and graceful rounded sound box. Apparently Blaine Hockner was making the McNally type and was told it was patented so he invented this new shape. The sound is much better, deeper and the base is easier to hold. I would urge anyone considering a strumstick to check out this website.

Right now it's listed on ebay under 'ebay strore" Smokey Mountain Music Works, but you can also google it directly. These are quality instruments, noticeably less expensive than the McNally's. The only drawback is that he and his wife have not yet made a cover that is close fitting yet.

Check it out!

I bought the long-necked chromatic Strumstick and really had a lot of fun playing it for a while.

Never tried to play any particular dulcimer songs - for me it's more of a solo instrument or accompanying instrument. Sounds very eastern, a bit like a bouzouki. It made me want to get a saz or bouzouki, but instead I ended up with a couple of ukuleles.

And that's why I'm selling my Strumstick: I have UAS (Ukulele Acquistion Syndrome). Anyone want to buy it, email me: ichadwick @ sympatico.ca (remove the spaces). Cost me $180 plus shipping. I'll sell it for $100 plus shipping. Comes with cloth bag and extra set of strings. Immaculate condition (will send pics).
