Hi Folks,

This really is my last post on this subject ("Thank God for that", I hear you blues guys say), but I could not finish it until I told those people who do not feel confident in re-tuning their harps, a possible way to get the Paddy Richter tuning without filing reeds.

In theory, by combining two types of Lee Oscar harmonica tunings you should be able to create a 'Paddy Richter' harp and a 'Country' harp. I am presuming that because the Melody Makers are designed to be played in cross harp (2nd position) that there will be no conflict of 'octave range', in other words, one reed plate  being in a different octave to the other.

Theoretically, if we have a Lee Oscar Major Diatonic harmonica in the key of 'C' and we wish to change it to a Paddy Richter layout we also need to have a Lee Oscar 'Melody Maker' in the key of 'G' and swap the two 'blow' (top) reed plates. We should then have a 'C' harp in 'Paddy Richter' layout and a 'C' harp in 'Country'layout.

For info on 'Country' tuning see Richard Hunter's excellent article @
http://www.hunterharp.com/shrp5tun.html

Swapping the 'blow' (top) reed plates of the following tunings should give you these Paddy Richter and Country Harp layouts.

P.R. = Paddy Richter

Major Diatonic in 'C', plus Melody Maker in 'G' produces a P. R. in 'C', and a Country in 'C'.
Major Diatonic in 'D', plus Melody Maker in 'A' produces a P. R. in 'D', and a Country in 'D'.
Major Diatonic in 'F', plus Melody Maker in 'C' produces a P.R. in 'F' , and a Country In 'F'.
Major Diatonic in 'G', plus Melody Maker in 'D' produces a P.R. in 'G' and a Country in 'G'.
Major Diatonic in 'A', plus Melody Maker in 'E' produces a P.R. in 'A' and a Country in 'A'.

***Lee Oscar only make the Melody Maker in the above keys.

To be absolutely accurate, the above Country layouts do differ from the standard on the 9th 'draw' note. In the original country tuning the note is a natural 4th, in the above configuration the 4th is sharpend at the 9th 'draw' hole. If you read Richard Hunter's discussion of country tuning you can decide whether this would be a problem to you.

You can buy the Lee Oskar 'Melody Maker' from our host Richard at excellent prices, see them @:

Of course if you don't want a 'Country' tuned harp you could just buy a set of 'Melody Maker' reed plates from Richard and swap the 'blow' reed plate on your 'Major Diatonic' to get your 'Paddy Richter' tuning.

I must point out that I have not tried any of these combinations yet. I have ordered a 'G' Melody Maker to combine with my 'C' Major Diatonic harp, when I have tried it out I will add an addendum to this post, and let you know the result.

Thank you for your time, I hope this info has been useful.

*Addendum 14th May 2008*
I am pleased to say that I can now confirm that by swapping the top reed plates (Blow) of a Major Diatonic In 'C' and a Melody Maker in 'G' you do get a Paddy Richter Harp in 'C', and a Country Harp in 'C', and they both sound great. Which makes me ask, why Tombo (Lee Oskar) don't supply these two tunings as standard, especially as they could assemble them out of stock parts and would need no extra production tooling, only new labeling and packaging?
