Actually, this a true story. Not a ture one. And it happened at an open mike last night it seemed that every patient at the nearest state hospital was issued a guitar and a day pass and were taking turns taking music back to the cave .
One horrible, out-of-tune, tone-deaf howler of mumbled personal angst after another.
I swear I could have recorded anyone of them, murdered him and played the tape in my defense...and be paid a pest-control bounty!
Then...finally a guy came in who really could play and who sang in a fine (and rare) tenor voice. He did three fine songs and the audience (in self-defense) insisted on an encore. He started doing "You got me running" which I think is a Jimmy Reed blues. (I have an old recording of Lou Reed (Velvet Underground) doing it).
I do that song. But way different. I stood up and showed him a mouth-harp, he beckoned me onto the stage with him and we wailed that tune until it was gone. And we left the stage to what I figure was the best hand of the night. Certainly one of the few sincere ones.
Great night.
