I want to make up a simple harmonica piece that follows (loosely or closely) the vocal melody in a simple song that only has two guitar chords-Cm and G. My chart says I need a Eb harp. But shouldnt I be able to coax something out of G harp (all I need is the Eb, no?), or am I going to need a minor harp? My knowledge of theory is basic (and restricted to major keys) so be gentle. I'm gonna go blow so maybe I'll have it figured out by the time someone replies. All I have are A,B,C,D so I hope I'm not in for another purchase already.

MB, How about just transposing the song so it fits with one of the harps you have? Instead of playing Cm and G, just play Am and E and use the C harp. That should work.

well, I'll have to see if I can sing it there I guess. If I can then I'm set, if it doesnt change the feel too much.

Nope, I cant sing it well in Am, tried Bm and I can do that, but it doesnt sound nearly as good as Cm. I guess I'll either have to wait till I feel like spending more money or do it without harmonica

There's a position on a diatonic harp that plays nicely in a minor key. I can't remember which number they call it but I can tell you the "rule"... go down one whole step from the key the song is in to find the harp you need. Example: I used to do a version of "St. James Infirmary Blues" in F# minor. This was done on a guitar by playing from the Em chord shapes while capoed up two frets. The harp on my rack was an E harp. The position is found somewhat to the right of the middle of the harp. Play with it a bit and see what can be done there (some notes are hard to find -- i.e. must be bent more than others). Hope this is of some help. Howlin' Hobbit (http://www.howlinhobbit.com) Got Uke?

That's third position or Dorian mode. The scale starts on 4 draw. dave

Eb or Bb would be the easiest. Eb would be 4th pos, Bb would be 3rd. Bb would sound more bluesy, Eb would sound more counrtry.
