Howdy,

wondering if violin bridges are modified to become fiddle bridges, and if so, what's done to them?  can an amateur make these modifications?

thanks,

Mark

Mark... I hope somebody smarter than me jumps in to enlighten us, but I think some people use standard violin bridges and some people flatten the arch to make it easier to play double strings. Elderly has lots of bridges and maybe you can buy different arches for this purpose. They will probably have a fiddle player around to help you when you get there. They have a practice room full of violins so you may be able to compare bridges in there.

Dave,

hey buddy, I checked those links you sent about the weekend's activities, sure wish the schedule would allow it, but my Thursday and Friday are snafu.  there's always the future, keep me posted like before, I think you still owe me a beer, haha.

:wave3:

If all goes well (knock on my fiddle) I'm headed to Elderly this Wednesday, though, gonna make a road trip out of it, keeping in mind the time difference.  Their site sez they open at 11, but i'm calling today, gonna try and snag some info over the phone from someone who's gonna be there tomorrow.  From their site pictures, the place looks pretty interesting.

Speaking of fiddle, I got one a few years ago new on eBay, my $62.00 Rothenberg.  I think that included shipping.  My friend's daughter teaches violin, and she was pretty surprised at the playability and tone, but the bow was garbage.  Bought a good one from SharMusic for about $85 or so, huge difference.   Took a couple of lessons before rotator cuff surgery, haven't picked it up since.  Fingerings are the same as a mando, I hear.

Mark-

Take a look at this link:

http://www.jaybuckey.com/violin_bridges.htm

I bought a fiddle (violin, actually) from Musicians Friend, and the bridge looked like it fit this example. I do not have the experience on the fiddle to determine if I need to adjust the bridge (I can barely make it through 3 verses of "Bile Them Cabbage Down").

(But I'm workin' at it) :fiddle2:

Also try:

http://www.fiddlefork.com/

They should have some info in the threads there. I haven't been to the site in quite a while, and need to take a look at it (too busy with banjo and Child ;) ).

:2banjo: Keep on pickin
Brad
