Here is my first attempt on tackling one those traditional Celtic tunes. Hope you all like it.  Its full name is "2 boats on the water." A duet.

Greetings Holley,

Your intonation is grand and your bowing as far as I could tell the same.  I would suggest that you use less reverb (EQ) in your recording.  What I heard was certainly haunting and evoked images of the mist over the bog but the air itself seemed to be a bit lost in the mix as a result.

I look forward to more fiddle tunes from you.

Peace,
Ed

Holley -
I enjoyed that. I agree with Ed that a bit less reverb might be good, but it does have a nice 'ethereal' sound. Haunting - to use Ed's word.

At times, and maybe I'm wrong, I felt a bit of hesitancy. I wasn't sure if it was just a timing thing or a planned hesitancy written into the music.

The piece is not one I'd heard before. Neat tune.

Thanks for sharing!
Amy

Hi Ed & Amy,

Thank you for checking it out.  I can actually upload a version without the reverb. I was experimenting with Cakewalk software to add a little reverb to the sound file but need to learn how to adjust it somehow. I am not best with recording equipment.  maybe I will upload the orginal recording this weekend when I get back on the XP machine. You might like that one better.

I had no example to listen to this  was purely from site reading out of a new book i got. I can read notes real well but have trouble with the rythms sometimes. Have to work on it so more. But having fun! I really appreciate you  feedback!

 Thanks again!

Holley :)

Hey Holley,

There are those in the traditional Irish music circle that contend that one cannot truly learn the tune from the dots on the page.  I suppose there are the same in the other Celtic traditions as well.  Not possessing the ability to read music and understanding so little music theory I can't say whether or not this is true.  I can say that I've heard many a well schooled musician play a tune strictly off the page and the result missed the mark really.  Oh they play the correct notes and in the right order but the soul of the tune gets lost somehow. All this said I recognize, and concur, that adding effects to recordings will often times create something that has greater appeal to a broader audience.

I'm looking forward to hearing the air with out the reverb. Please post the link to the newly posted recording if you do so.

Peace,
Ed

Holley!  Your tune reminds me of ships that pass in the night.  Perhaps it's what the whole thing's about.

Others have mentioned the depth of reverb.  I heard the ships' movement on an empty sea.

Amy said there was hesitancy.  I thought there was a distinct lack of commumication between the two boats.  I'm no expert.  My nautical son described a storm his ship passed through in the Tasman Sea.

I had to reel to the bog and sing the Gargle Song.

Ed seems to think a connection exists between bogs and boats.  I agree with him.  Except that the recording evoked a much bigger sea than an Irish bog.  Perception.  How music enhances it.

I'm a fan already, Holley.  In any case we're not strangers.  I've enjoyed a goodly few of the tunes you've posted.  You are one talented woman.

Hugs from and old friend and admirer,  Smiffy.

PS Excuse one technical question:  Are you playing the two parts?

I sometimes find it hard to keep time with me.  When I'm recording.  I try to think of someone, or something, the tune represents.

More Hugs.

PPS: Help me and Mr Verne Garrison get "Bill Baily" going.  We have all the equipment we require.  It's a good tune.  Lots of singing harmonies, plenty of scope for all sorts of instruments.

(I'll get a reputation.) The Last Hug of the evening...

I've just remembered an excuse for just one more hug.  I found the feel of ragtime at my Mum's knee.  She grabbed me by the ears and toes did Mum.  Made her piano rock.

I hadn't known where my love of the Irish music came from till I discovered my Dad's Dad came from Co Claire.  He's watching me.  Making sure I enhance the band.

Ken Nichol inspired me: I played ma best at Ken's side.  He died helping someone. We had some ferocious jam sessions. Whisky, beer, we smiled constantly. One of the few men I've loved.

He had Irish, he had Rag.  He wrote and played Wset Coast Kiwiana.  The feel's what's important.  Be adrift when you float on the waters.  Sing for someone.

Listen to Ken on my site, playing"Mooncoin".  Read his reviews.  Post a review. Join my mourning.  Inspire me.

Sleep well, soon.

Hey Holley,

Very nice.  I was reminded of a time when we were traveling to Galway City on our way ultimately to Westport.  We came upon a quay where just two boats were tied off.  There must have been a bit of a breeze outside the entrance to this little back bay as these two boats were swaying in unison almost as though they were choreographed.  Thank you for taking me back to that time.  I do so miss Ireland.

Peace,
Ed

Holley, I'm probably with Ed and Amy in that I prefer the unadorned version, even though I like both versions.  If you were to make a CD, I would use the unadorned version in the main body of the album, then maybe use the reverbed version for the last track as a reprise/outro, slowly fading.

A little unsolicited advice: I've always found the reverb function of my sound editor (Adobe Audition) to sound a bit artificial.  What works better for me is to copy the track, offset the two a few milliseconds from each other, and pan them to different sides of the mix.  This sounds much more natural.  Just be careful not to offset them too much, or you may end up with a cluster.

Ed, even though I've never actually been on the Ancient Sod, I miss it as well, but you can probably understand how that could be.  As long as there are still people (like C.R.) to bring a bit of it to me every now and then, I'll be alright.

Holley -
Yes - without the reverb works much better for me. This is a really nice piece. Hearing it without the reverb allows for me to hear the interplay between the two fiddles more clearly.

Nice!

Amy

Hi Amy, Ed, Smiffy and Jim,

You are all very inspiring to me! Thank you so much for taking the time to listen and you all have given me much valuable direction!

I hope to keep my focus on learning more traditional fiddle  tunes of all sorts. I would like to make the music avaliable for others to download & enjoy or as a contribution to those who would like to use them as an example to learn traditional fiddle tunes as I have been seeking as well.

Hugs to you all! thanks again!

Holley
