man o man, talk about frustrated!! i am trying to learn "bile them cabbage down" i can play the song beautifully on one string...but when i try to add that second string it sounds like screeching you would  hear when the gates of hell have opened.

my fingers from the A string are hitting the open E string....and i cannot for the life of me control it.
does anybody have any advice? practice, practice, practice....I've got that one....but it seems to me, if i am doing something wrong...no amount of practice is going to help this one much.

i live in  VERY small town east texas....alas...i can't find a fiddler out here to help me with lessons. :-(

I hope someone jumps in who is a lot better fiddler than me. I took lessons from a classical violinist. When I first tried oldtime/bluegrass I had a lot of problems with the sound on double strings until I loosened the tension on the bow. Don't know if this is really helpful or if I was just getting better by the time I did it.

Well, if you guys really played violin, you're in deep trouble with the fiddle!

Completely different instruments!!!

No, seriously, didn't you learn to move your finger over some to avoid touching the adjacent string? Sort of like aiming between the strings in order to do a double stop with the same finger, only different.

Just the way I do it, but I've only been playing for about 2 years, and still can't do a decent drone.

You want to play on the A string and drone the E string, but your fingers are touching the E string, right?

So move your fingers over so they touch the D string. It doesn't matter if they do; you are not droning on the D.

If you want to drone the D, then move the fingers so they touch the E.

Those fingers have to go somewhere - unless you have very nice slender digits. Put them where they won't do any harm.

It still takes quite a bit of practice, but I hope that helps.
