You know I have been kicking the ideal around to maybe try the Fiddle,

I played the mandolin for a few years and has the same tuning so

Maybe that would help. I tried one once and just made it squick and

never give it any more thought. I will let you know how that works out.

FF

Brad,

I once heard Doc Watson say he tried to play the fiddle for a while but sounded kind of like a cat climbing up a screen door.

About 20 years ago I tried playing for 2 or 3 months and still sounded terrible so I gave up. Thinking back now, it might have had something to do with the fact that I was trying to learn on a fiddle that retailed for $39.  Might have just been me of course, but I wouldn't mind another shot at it with a decent fiddle.

well, i'm not alone, i guess :fiddle2:

my fiddle came from 'musician's friend' almost 2 years ago, now. it cost me $100 and included the bow, hard gigbag, and a 'learn the fiddle' vcr tape.

i guess that i just need to work at it more:clap:, but it's tuff to find time between the fiddle, banjo, guitar and uke. (not to mention tin whistle, american indian flute, jaws harp :stomp:, and time with this computer.)

Hey Brad... after reading your note I remembered that I picked up an old fiddle at a yard sale a couple of years ago for something like 5 bucks. I'd forgotten about it til now but I just went and dug it out of the closet. On the inside it says:

"Ton-Klar"
The Dancla
Made in Germany expressly for
William Lewis & Sons
Chicago, Illinois

Inside the case there is a "Loan Agreement for School-Owned Musical Instruments" stating that the value is $350.

I looked it up on the Internet and that seems to be about the price it sells for. Hmmm... maybe I'll see if I can get it fixed up and try to scratch out a tune (right now it's got 1 string and no bridge but otherwise seems okay) . Always room for another section on ezFolk!

:fiddle2:

I decided not to try to salvage the old fiddle I got at the yard sale a while back. I figured I'd probably be as well off to just buy an inexpensive one to start with and see how it goes.

Adjusting for inflation I'm probably just about where I was with the $39 fiddle 20 years ago. If I sound really bad (which is likely) I'll just blame it on the cheap fiddle.

So anybody know any good fiddle websites? I looked around and couldn't hardly find any tablature at all.

:fiddle2:

Richard -

Two sites I have found that should be helpful are:

http://www.jaybuckley.com

and

http://www.fiddlerwoman.com

Lots of good stuff there, you should be able to find something to your liking.

:thumbs2: keep on pickin' (or bowin')

Thanks for the links Brad. I remember Beverley (fiddlerwoman.com) from the old MP3.com days. She had a fiddle tutorial on there.

I'm familiar with Jay Buckey's site but it's been a while since I'd been there and I didn't realize he had fiddle music. It'll be a big help, and I need all the help I can get!

One small correction on  the Jay Buckey link in case anybody else wants to visit his site (there's no "L")...

I've been using this site for my fiddle tabs:  http://www.alltabs.com/fiddle_tabs.php

I am enjoying fiddle, I dont get as much practice time as I would like between playing banjo and guitar, but I can feel myself improving.  My main problem right now is developing bow technique, its tough to get used to.  I cant wait to play fiddle tunes on a fiddle instead of a guitar, it has always felt weird to me to play them on guitar.  Also, cant wait to hear the clawhammer/fiddle combo, its my favorite style of oldtime/bluegrass music.  See yall.

:fiddle1: GS-

What a great site! This looks like it has unlimited possibilities for all my instruments.

Now to find time for all the tabs I want to look at!
