I just got back from Tennesse visting family for the Thanksgiving Holiday. I just bought a new fiddle bridge at a flea market the other day  to replace my classical one, so I can try it out. The gentleman who sold it to me told me I may need to sand down the legs to fit it properly.  I am looking for any additional tips on how to set it up? I would appreciate any advice you may have.

 Thanks in advance!

Holley-

I would strongly suggest that you jump on over to FiddleFork, they are a bunch of fiddle players of all types, with much more experience than I think is available here.

http://www.fiddlefork.com

I know there was a thread just recently about shaping and setup of bridges. I'll try to find the thread and post a link here, but I think FiddleFork is a great place for fiddlers.

Of course, that means more time away from the instrument and more time spend browsing interesting music stuff

Try this thread: http://www.fiddlefork.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1948

There are several more about how to sand the feet to fit the fiddle and other things. I hope you can read this thread, if not, you may have to sign up first (it's free).

Holley I have never done a fiddle but I have a lot of mandolins and it should work the same

The top is not flat on them, so you lay a piece of sand paper on the top where the bridge is going to fit ( make sure grit side up ) and then rub the bottom of the bridge back and forth so as to sand the bridge the same as the top and you should get a good fit that way.

Hope this helps

Charlie

I play a little fiddle (no, it's a full-sized instrument, I just don't play it frequnetly).  And have replaced the bridge once. Two minutes with medium sandpaper on the tip of finger was all it took. Fiddles are pretty much all the same size. It's part of the definition of a fiddle. The adjustments are not all great.

Try placing it on the fiddle. You may not have to do anything.

I've learned that other classical strings have far looser specs. When we went shopping for a viola for a daughter, we saw a bewildering range from instruments hardly bigger than fiddles to things that looked like the bastard children of tenor guitars and fiddles.

The cello carcas I found on the street without fingerboard or bridge, for example: I could buy a bridge blank for about $40-60 but I would have to shape it or it would not be playable. The fingerboard is also not standard. A blank would cost a lot more and be a lot more work to fit. It's been gathering dust in the basement for three years.

Hi Holley,

A flea market in TN with violin bridges?  Guess I must be hitting the wrong places.

Good luck with the bridge.  In addition to fitting the feet to the belly you might want to flatten the top of the bridge out a bit.

And Brad, thanks much for passing along that link.  It's fantastic.

Thanks Brad, Charlie, Phil & Lyle for the tips! I will first try the bridge as is and see what happens, but will also check out that link you sent Brad as well.

The man at the flea market sold it to me for $3!! I thought not too big of an investment if I screw it up! He also gave that tip to place the sand paper on top of the fiddle to sand the bridge down.

I let you know how it worked out. Holley:wave1:

Hi,

You could also check out the manufacturing/repair section at the Fiddle and Alternative Strings Forum, http://www.fiddleforum.com Steve Perry (Gianna Strings) and M Dalton regularly hang out there and are happy to answer your questions.

Cheers,

Mark.

" I let you know how it worked out. Holley"

So, inquiring minds are wanting to know how that bridge worked out!

(Mine, too, when I'm fully in possession of it :2gramps: )

Brad

Well I tried the new bridge but had to sand down the feet. Now I understand why the guy that sold me the bridge to put the sand paper over the bridge area so the feet could sand down to fit in the curves. (boy do I have my work cut out) and also need to sand down 1/4 inch off the top. Anyway I put the old one back on for now till I can get the other in proper fit.  I started working on some new/old ideas combined a new tune I added. Still needs some works but here is a first take.

(Thanks Tony for that neat link tutorial I was able to fix this link)

I know that this is an old post, but if anyone needs to fit a bridge, go to this site.  Good info, which I use all the time.
