Okay, folks, I've never even picked up a fiddle, but I do have a lot of fun with my ukulele (no musical background other than that). My best friend, who lives in Weiser, ID, invited me to spend next week with her at the Old Time Fiddling Contest there. She said there's lots of jamming and beginners will be welcome. She's rented me a fiddle for the week and I'm packing my stuff. In short, are there any basic tips that you folks would offer me so I'd better enjoy this intensive, one-week intro to fiddling? I'll be taking my ukulele, too (look for the befuddled beginning fiddler in the Hawaiian shirt....)

Oh-h-h-h, are you in trouble!!!!  Take a recorder and lots of tape or media. Get plenty of sleep before you go (most festivals don't allow sleeping, what with the all-night jams)! Prepare to fall in love with an instrument that will addict you while making you want to throw it into the nearest chipping machine (because that will make a much better sound that you can start with). Enjoy youself and listen and watch as much as you can. The fiddle is an instrument unlike any other I have played. It will seduce you and at the same time make you want to give up altogether. It will cause you to leave your home and friends in search of mastery. Later you will go five nights to the cross-roads far out in the country, and on the fifth night the devil will show up and you will sell your soul for the ability to play the fiddle! Have a great time, and let us know how it was. Looking forward to hearing something from you soon.

Ditto to everything Brad says. You'll have a ball and have to buy your own fiddle. If you got money or a credit card, take them. The best way to buy a fiddle is to have a good fiddle player tell you which one to buy. dave
