Hi Everyone,

Just heard about this site from Banjo Brad, and thought I'd say "HI".  I play mostly Old Time and Celtic and about ready to start taking some Western Swing lessons.  I have a few songs at http://www.ezfolk.com/audio/nofrets if you're brave enough to listen.  (I would rate myself as an amateur, so beware!)

My wife and I are going to the Highlands this fall and I'm planning to take my fiddle.  If there's any folks from Scotland that know the rules of engagement, please let me know.   It's my understand that if I take my fiddle case into a pub, I'll eventually be asked to play.

Please let me know if you have any more information to share.

Thanks,

Nofrets

Welcome no-frets,

As I can attest, The fiddle is some instrument to master, it is one that I gave up on. Sounds like you have it worked out

Charlie

Welcome aboard, nofrets! Glad you could join the fun.

(Now, I've got to get busy and do more fiddle stuff here!)

Banjo Brad,

Just posted a few more tunes.  Started a Waltz, Celtic, and Old Time album.  Figured I'd throw a few in each just for grins.  This is really cool, and I appreciate you telling me about it.

Take care,

Nofrets

Nofrets

I'm from the north of Ireland, just a giant's causeway over the water from scotland. welcome to ezfolk, hope you have a great time in scotland. As far as I know the protocol for music sessions is much the same; find out where a session will be happening, show up with instrument, ask someone that looks like they know what they are doing if it's ok to join in on tunes you know (some sessions are actually paid gigs for musicians, and some are just run by strange people). In my experience most session players will accommodate anyone with a love of trad. music and even a rudimentary ability. The important attribute is a willingness to learn and to pass on what you know. This is how the tradition is passed on.

Also keep a look out for ceilidhs (pronounced Kale-ease)

These are slightly more formal with more dancing but it would be a poor ceilidh that would turn away an extra fiddler. I will post some links as to where you can find these gatherings. Where exactly do you intend to be based?

Gerry,

Sorry for the delay replying back.  I'm traveling on business this week.  Regarding our trip to the Highlands, I know we'll be staying at a B&B in Lochaber near Ben Nevis.  That's the only thing we're sure about right now.  Then we're thinking about heading over to Inverness.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know...Thanks,

Larry
