Playing the Melody on the 2nd String

To add some variety to your playing and to get a more dulcimer-like sound, play the melody on the 2nd string instead of the 1st string. It’s a simple thing to do: just add 3 frets to whatever fret the melody is on the 1st string. For example, below are the first eight measures of “Home Sweet Home” with the melody shown on both the 1st and 2nd strings. Try playing the melody only on the 1st string and then play it on the 2nd string and you’ll see that the notes are the same. You can also see in the standard notation that the notes are the same.

This whole 1st string/2nd string melody for “Home Sweet Home” is written out in the Tablature section, but you’ll learn more by picking out the melodies yourself. First play a passage (maybe just a measure or two, or even one note) from one of the melody arrangements that is written on the 1st string, then figure it out and play it on the 2nd string.

I’ve also included a clawhammer arrangement for Home Sweet Home” with the melody played on the 2nd string. As you learn to play melodies on the 1st string, be sure to also work them out on the 2nd string. You don’t really need tablature for that because you know that you just need to add 3 frets to the 1st string melody and you’ve got it for the 2nd string.

Playing the melody also comes in handy for Scruggs Style playing, which will be introduced in the next lesson.
