Pictured below are the first four measures of the song, “Keep on the Sunny Side.” If you’re new to music, at first glance it may seem complicated. But just relax and take a few minutes to read the pages of this tutorial and in no time you can learn to read the Dulcijo tab. Notice that there are actually two different musical staffs. The top staff is standard notation and the bottom staff is tablature (or tab). If you already read music you can read the standard notation, but if you don’t read music, that’s fine. The tablature provides all of the information you need, so you can just disregard the top staff.

Tablature provides an easy way to read and write music as it is played on the Dulcijo as well as other stringed instruments. It has similarities to regular written music (standard notation), but there are many differences also that make tablature much easier to understand. The tablature staff looks similar to standard notation, but instead of each line representing a particular note, each line simply represents a string on the Dulcijo. With a little practice this method provides a clear and immediate mental image of what should be played.

On the following pages we’ll break it down and show you what each element of the tablature represents. In just a few minutes you’ll know all the basics you need to get started playing.
