Clawhammer Level 1

Because the Dulcijo is so suitable for the clawhammer style, most of the tablature arrangements are in this style. There are two levels of clawhammer arrangements for each song in most cases, with Level 1 being a simple arrangement and Level 2 being more complex. The Level 1 arrangements contain the techniques that you have learned up to this point if you have studied the tutorials in the order they are presented on the Tutorials page.

The Level 1 clawhammer arrangements are basically just the melody of the song with the addition of the bum-ditty in appropriate places.

Here are the first four measures of the melody arrangement of “Bile Dem Cabbage Down.”

For the Level 1 clawhammer arrangement we simply take the melody and add the bum-ditty. It’s not necessary to rigidly adhere to the melody although it’s fine if it works out that way. Notice that most often the eighth notes (dit-ty) occur at the count of 2 and 4 in each measure.

Also, we don’t include the chords since you don’t need to hold the chords while playing the clawhammer arrangements; you are just playing single notes.

You can practice as few or as many of the Level 1 clawhammer arrangements as you would like to, but be sure to have a pretty good grasp on Level 1 before you advance to Level 2. This is the foundation of clawhammer playing and the Level 2 arrangements will be much easier if you take time to master the first level.
