When I first decided to teach bluegrass banjo on ezFolk, my biggest decision was in choosing what techniques to use at each level. After some experimentation I decided that
many songs could be played by using a combination of three simple techniques -- the pinch, double
thumbing, and the mixed roll -- and all songs labeled Level 1 will use only these three techniques.
This method allows me to add additional “Level 1” songs using only these simple techniques, and it allows beginners to become familiar with the songs as well as a
fair amount of 3-finger picking. If the techniques are too simple, just skip Level 1 and go to Level 2 or 3 instead. On the other hand, if you’re struggling with more
advanced techniques you can learn a wider variety of Level 1 songs (as more are added) without the pressure of having to learn more difficult material.
