The MP3 recording doesn’t contain any clawhammer banjo but it would have been fine to use instead of the 3-finger picking. This tab will give you an idea how it
could be played clawhammer style.
Keep in mind as you play this that there are two lines of tablature (upper and lower). The upper line contains only the melody of the song so that you’ll know
where you are while playing it. The lower line begins with a simple accompaniment that is similar to what I am playing on the MP3 recording beginning at the 2nd verse. The break that follows is the
same as on the MP3.
Note: The MP3 was recorded in the key of F using a long neck banjo that I usually capo on the 3rd fret. In this case I capoed the 1st fret
because it suited my voice better (and because I learned the song by playing along with the recording from the movie, “O Brother, Where Art Thou,” and it was also in F). The
computer generated MIDI files above are still in the key of G.
