This
arrangement of Shady Grove is easy to play. It’s in G Modal tuning so
be sure to tune the 2nd string up a half step to C from G tuning. G
Modal tuning is most often used in old-time styles such as clawhammer
but it works well for 3-finger picking too when you’re playing songs
such as this.
My MP3 recording begins with the
clawhammer
arrangement
and then ends with the arrangement below. I recorded it on the Gold
Tone Banjola without picks but it sounds good played on a regular banjo
with picks too.
