Devah was born in a small town in Texas, called Cleburne. Her grandfather was a music minister with a doctorate in church music and strongly supported her music education. When she was growing up there was not a morning she did not wake up to music blaring from her Father’s stereo and usually him chiming in, trying to top the volume with his own voice.
Devah began performing when she was five years old. Like many people, it began in a church. She performed regularly in church for thirteen years. Devah became active in theater and choral performances when she moved to Austin in 1984. She sang a duet with Widgeon Holland for a U.I.L. competition when she was twelve and won First Place for the performance. She was regularly chosen to sing solos for concerts by her High School teacher who followed her from middle school into high school, where she sang as a member of not only the regular choir, but also a jazz ensemble that performed for special events through out the city. She performed solo at the Palmer Auditorium during a Christmas Bazaar at the age of sixteen. At seventeen, Devah auditioned and won a spot in an exclusive ensemble called "Glowing Heart" at Dallas Baptist University. Glowing Heart traveled through Central America performing concerts in Belize and Guatemala. After she left college she began performing her original compositions, acappella at coffee shops during open mike night. She met her first band mate, Steven Germer, at a job interview for the Acoustic Cafe in Austin, Texas. She didn’t take the job, but did play shows there several times before it closed. Her first professional show was at B.D. Riley’s on Sixth Street downtown performing her original music. At the end of the show she was rewarded by the owner with a regular weekly gig. She played there for a year. She has performed at the Caucus Club, Momo’s, The Lucky Lounge, B.D. Riley’s and Ruta Maya in Austin, Texas.
Since that time, she has taken time off to develop music in new genres but continues to perform at private parties and special events. She is now working with Steve Zirkel, an outstanding musician who played and traveled with the great Leonard Cohen and currently plays with Will Taylor and Strings Attached, Sara Hickman, Libby Kirkpatrick and many other Austin musicians.
Devah wrote her first song when she was three years old. From that point on songwriting became a necessary part of life. She primarily writes Pop, Blues, Standard-style Jazz, Folk, Folk-Rock and plain old Rock and Roll.
Devah religiously studies lyrical and melodic composition and her influences and styles range far and wide for this reason. She is driven by many things to write and perform music but most importantly, because... it is her Life.

Hi Devah Would you consider putting your Butterfly People in the new soulfolk category, wich I suggested to Mr Hefner. I think its appropriate. The song is an inspitation to our kind of music. Love Steen/DeMildeVilde |
